1) What, in your personal opinion, is the most EPIC film of all time?
BARAKA, 2001: A Space Odyssey & Apocalypse Now
2) Please cite the most EPIC sequence you have ever witnessed in a film. Ever.
This is hard. The storming of Omaha beach in Saving Private Ryan, The last battle scene in Children of Men, the sequence in Apocalypse Now where "The End" by The Doors plays, the psychotically trippy end sequence in 2001 where you forget everything in your mind, and the last battle scene in "Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix", mainly because I saw it on an IMAX screen with 3-D glasses.
3) Daniel Day Lewis or Peter O'Toole: Who is more EPIC?
Daniel Day-Lewis is an epic actor and Peter O'Toole does epic movies. I'm taking Day-Lewis because I've seen him in more stuff. O'Toole's eyes are frightening in "Lawrence of Arabia" though. They really need to have him play Dumbledore in the next two Harry Potter films.
4) Terrence Malick is indeed one of the most EPIC filmmamkers to ever exist. Agree or Disagree? Elaborate and cite examples if neccesary.
As far as blatant observation of nature and the human condition, it doesn't get more epic than Malick? He's done 4 films and the most accessible one a lot of people walked out on because they thought it was going to be "Saving Private Ryan" in the Pacific. The only director I can think of that minutely observes the epic detail of the mind and earth is Wim Wenders. It's interesting to see how Badlands influenced Paris, Texas, and then in turn Wings of Desire influenced The New World, mainly through the colors and lighting. That's what I thought at least. Malick really forces you to extensively search an image, much like Van Sant has in his last three films. I am very fond of this kind of film-making at this stage in my life.
5) When Jared Leto looses his arm in Requiem for a Dream, it is indeed EPIC. Were you more disturbed/violated/upset or shaken/moved/floored by the climax of this film?
I was all of the above. It made me sick and want to gag. At the same time I knew I had seen greatness. Is that twisted?
6) Was Lord of the Rings really that EPIC? Be totally honest either way.
When I saw "The Return of the King", I thought it made "Braveheart" look like a budget indie. But that movie is blatantly epic. I know there is a shit-load of CGI but I think it works. I'm sorry, I believe in it when done right. What makes a film's epic-ness? Is it number of locations? Is it the size of battle sequences? Does it have nothing to do with geography? I don't know. I bought into these movies with the first one, stumbled in the second, then came around in the third. These movies are totally epic in the most blunt sort of way, and that is fine be by me from time to time. I would classify this as "Sword and Sandal" and I would also say that the genre is dead. Don't even bring up "300" people. I couldn't take that movie seriously. I can also understand why you wouldn't take "Lord of the Rings" seriously, but I did, and that is that.
7) CGI : EPIC or complete and utter horse shit?
Refer to the above answer.
8) Best EPIC Independant ever film is - ?
What does independent even mean anymore?
I believe "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was "independent".
9) Name a career move by an actor or director that qualifies as truly EPIC
Brad Pitt pulling out of the first epic version of "The Fountain" to do "Troy", another epic. What an epic move in stupidity.
Would Tony Kaye trying to get his named removed from "American History X" be considered an epic move? Can someone say Billy Walsh?
10) Vincent Gallo. Could he use a touch more of the EPIC to his overall acting/directing/editing/soundtracking/filming/casting/financing/producing/etc techniques, or is he just fine as is?
I think his pace is getting more and more epic (slow, which is fine), just like Malick. I am very much looking forward to his next film. It would be a curious thing to see a Vincent Gallo war movie. I'm excited for the Baz Luhrman one. I just hope he doesn't lose his style in the process.
11) Your favorite EPIC Love story commited to film is - ?
The Fountain, Vanilla Sky, 8 1/2, Jules and Jim, A Very Long Engagement
12) Could you see yourself living out the same EPIC story in real life? Would you want to? Could you handle the EPIC-ness of it all!?
Geez I don't know. Maybe "8 1/2" minus the infidelity.
13) Was this survey....EPIC!?!?
The questions were, but only thirteen of them. That doesn't seem too epic, but I do thank you for it. It helps me stay sane while my most un-epic day trickles slowly by.
