You can purchase renters insurance from any company or agency that sells Homeowners Insurance.

Most people only think that renters insurance covers the contents of the their home or apartment, but in most cases it is extended to include liability insurance if someone gets injured on your property and your personal belongings even if they are not in your home (let's say they were in the trunk of your car).

It is usually pretty inexpensive and worth the money.

I'd like to know about what it is and how to get it. I live in NYC and heard that having renter's insurance is something that's valuable to have and most renters either don't know about it or don't think it's important enough to get. Living in a metro area (NYC), there's alot of good reasons to get it just in case of fires and the like.

What would you like to know-

We rented for a few years before we bought our house and did get renters insurance only because we had computers and firearms and felt that if we got broken into that we would be at a real loss, it is very in expensive and depending on where you live it should cover break in theft, fire damage, water damage if it is the property owners fault. If I recall that is what it covers - you can often get a quote from your insurance agent and they should be able to let you know what exactly it covers. Good Luck
